There’s something, some magic going on. View entire discussion ( 26 comments) More … It ended up being kind of alone so the end was the best place for it. The song was premiered on February 18, 2020. Was that intentional? Are there any other songs that have a hidden significance or meaning?
We can surrender for a moment to kindly hypnotic music like “Witches” and be at ease. I’m going to write this song that’s political.’ It was more like I see this problem and I have these feelings about it. Some of them are a texture.
Amid the hellscape that is 2020, Purity Ring is here to soothe your quarantine blues. Listen to it while laying in the grass with your eyes closed; move your arms to the tune. As troublesome as our current crisis might be, at least we have “Calvaire” to move us with it’s embellished, percolating beat.
Was that journey intentional? Are there any songs that stand out as particularly personal to you? I think not necessarily straightforwardly but I feel like in the way that every decision we make it political, yes. I guess in a lot of ways I’m trying to explain how… It’s centered around a lot of these forms that are feminized just because they’re coming through me, too. So “rubyinsides” has a political significance as well.
I’d keep trying and trying and there’s a point usually where you’re like, ‘okay this song isn’t working, it’s not going to happen,’ and you let it go. To prevent you from drifting to sleep, a plucky synth part enters, and suddenly you’re catapulted into a magical quest to save Zelda...or something.
It’s not necessarily all represented through a character.
In this strange moment in history, there is arguably no better time to release music about the home.
Now, after years of preparation, they’re releasing a third album, WOMB, a homespun record written, produced, and mixed entirely by the band. Corin sent the beat and I went over there and it was pretty immediate. It starts on the inside and ends on the outside sort of literally. In the chorus, their lyrics switch back and forth between English and Spanish.
The soundscape is calm as mxmtoon asks “Isn’t it nice to be all by yourself?” This track poetically encapsulates feelings familiar to many young people. Don’t be surprised if you catch yourself bouncing along to Chris Rovik’s latest single “Burning Bridges” which, despite being a bittersweet farewell to a toxic relationship, makes itself out to be quite the departure from the artist’s last EP, Let Go, which he released around the same time last year. This one we tried going on some writing trips at the beginning back in 2016 but we ended up writing more from home and just wanting to stay home and be able to have it all in one place. In terms of music we didn't have other projects of our own that we worked on.
The artwork for all three of your albums has been distinctly feminine, including WOMB. Like ‘oh this fits and it makes sense and its like its own world. There’s a few songs that we did from beginning to end together. So you’re no longer religious but scriptural storytelling still appeals to you? The chilly electro-pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James, Purity Ring began when the two were in Canadian indie rock act Gobble Gobble (which later became Born Gold).
I don’t like that word, I don’t say spiritual very often, it doesn’t feel good. Hypnotic vocals by James are supported by backing vocals from Jonna Bjerre, “Ride like a maniac / Into, into the light.”. It ended up being fitting in almost every way we could think of.
Corin and both know that we want to do as much of it ourselves as we can. It had a lot more headroom, I guess. The vocal is lush and delivered in French, but you don’t have to know French to appreciate this banger.
The first releases of WOMB (“peacefall,” “stardew,” “pink lightning,” and “i like the devil”) show the duo sticking to what they do best: producing glittering, synth-forward pop that plays with syntax and swims through your ears. It’s kind of like the song gets written but then all the work gets done after that to make it into how it sounds in the end.
“Witches” from Alice Phoebe Lou is magical.
We didn’t have a deadline until the very end and I think it took a lot of time for us to figure out what we knew wanted the record to be and then once we got to that point in the last year the ball got rolling. I feel like we have learned enough about each other’s workflow that there is a lot more room for the creativity that happens the way it does now, just working together more. While the band was on tour, Roddick and James grew increasingly inspired by the sounds of contemporary R&B and wanted to make music reflecting that.
I don’t know, it’s quite earnest I guess in that way. Yael Naim casts a siren’s spell, tantalizing with her perfect vocal blend of airiness and earthiness. I’m not just writing about myself and things I'm trying to figure out personally. The chilly electro-pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James, Purity Ring began when the two were in Canadian indie rock act Gobble Gobble (which later became Born Gold).
Like last time, with Another Eternity we had someone else do the final mixes and this time we did it ourselves. "peacefall" is a gorgeous tale of finding peace in darkness. That’s how I see the world and try to write about in a careful way. The duo teased “peacefall” on Facebook, calling it a song “to keep you company.” After years of radio silence, Purity Ring is on the cusp of releasing their first album in five years (WOMB drops today, April 3rd). We really took our time with this record. These are songs to listen to alone in your bedroom when the insomnia hits. Writing these songs helps me to see them in a way that makes them easier for me. It’s my own sort of rebellion against the way I was raised. Runnner’s latest release, “Ur Name on a Grain of Rice," is a melancholic but self-aware confessional that sweeps across the part of your chest reserved for heartbreak. It will feel, I hope, like the record sounds. What have you been up to in the last five years? But yeah, we did it even more ourselves this time than before.
I guess a guest vocal is sort of different than the whole construction of making a record.
James’ archetypal storytelling makes each message digestible, like a fable or fairytale.
We can do it ourselves.’ I feel like what we get from that is time and time again worth it for us. I do think they all fit in one way or another but that’s like a lot to get into I guess. It’s land and color and space. Maria Their debut album Shrines has a distinctly underground feeling.
Amid the hellscape that is 2020, Purity Ring is here to soothe your quarantine blues. Collective. Did you see Honeyland? But yeah, it’s become less entertaining lately and just straight-up scary. Hello...hello?
Do you have any favorite composers?
Even down to the stage production it’s like everytime we hire someone to help us it doesn't feel like it is an expression of us that way that we want to portray ourselves and we sort of learn from experience, very little experience in hiring others, but our art is more satisfying to us if we do it ourselves and sometimes that’s harder and sometimes that means a song takes three years to write. "Stardew" is the first single from Purity Ring's 3rd studio album "WOMB". The matriarch is “femia.” That’s about the person in my family who I’m talking about. We want it to feel gratifying in the ways that it always has and keeping it in house is how we have to do that.
Very religious.
