Blumhouse's Sweetheart is a monstrous survival story and a trip worth taking. It has all of the elements of a cheesy TV movie thriller, from the obviously manipulative villain to the ridiculously overboard teenage scheming, but the plot and acting aren't that bad. With Kiersey Clemons, Emory Cohen, Hanna Mangan Lawrence, Andrew Crawford. First paranormal Castaway then Castaway versus the monster. The trailer was decent, but gave the whole movie away. It helps that a Fiji island is a naturally gorgeous setting, but Dillard takes care to keep the film textured, providing level changes and washes of color by embracing the various “sets” on the island; a hammock, a bright red raft, and a hollowed-out tree trunk all provide distinctly different staging grounds for Jenn’s showdowns with the monster, and Dillard uses each new location to spice up the film with new forms of tension-building. Clemons' engaging performance is the film's biggest strength, as it finds inventive ways to blend tropes to keep the audience engaged in its thrills. The cast is quite watchable.
