However, in most of our Indigenous-North American cultures, the use of force or war, was a last resort and was actually a rare occurrence.

It should also be noted that Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Co or Associate Supervisors may also provide some advice from a cultural broker and/or cultural mentor perspective. The discussion was part of a speaker series titled Community Resurgence, hosted by Ryerson University’s Centre for Indigenous Governance and Ryerson’s Aboriginal Education Council.

Neither male or female could fulfill their role without the other fulfilling their own. Every tribe in every culture had to respect their tribe’s role on the land. These parts are referred to as infrastructures. Depending on the land and its seasons, many tribes and cultures had a combination of these three basic roles.

We acknowledge Australian Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islander People as the first inhabitants of the nation, and acknowledge Traditional Owners of the lands where our staff and students live, learn and work. Sustainable economic development based on traditional roles will provide the economic base to harmonize into the global system; and, with that in place, Indigenous People can choose their own destiny. The first key to rebuilding is the Elders. They were taught how to apply these teachings to their daily lives. We all know that a nation has many different parts that make up the nation as a whole. Our men had the complimentary and supportive role of ensuring that the women had everything they needed to accomplish their childcare roles. They would be taught about plants and medicines, what type of woods are good for certain tools, what types of animals are good for hunting and how to use the various parts of the animal.

To keep this discussion simple, we will refer to people that lived on the land as indigenous people; an indigenous tribe as a grouping of indigenous people; and, a group of indigenous tribes sharing common land, ancestry, and values as an indigenous culture. Unfortunately, Western Society, as a group, is very prone to being a people who live off the people who live on the land.

When a boy reached the age of puberty it became the responsibility of his father, uncles, other male relatives and friends to teach him what he needed to know to become a man. Our cultural teachings are based on peaceful and respectful living, while interacting with family and during communication. It was the responsibility of both men and women to teach children. So, to begin sustainable development, we rebuild core infrastructure.

Reestablished traditional roles on the land, including trade, must harmonize with these "new neighbouring lands and peoples".

The underlying basis of all our people’s way of life teaches us to be kind to one another, to help where we can and to have healthy, loving relationships. There are three basic groups of roles; agricultural, pastoral, and hunter-gatherer. In many regions, indigenous roles were replaced by jobs. In either circumstance, the “warriors” of our communities have been misrepresented for many years. However, underneath these specifics is the common theme of peaceful and respectful relations. Unfortunately, despite its arrogance, Western Society, does not have the solution for every problem encountered by remnant indigenous people in every land they have colonized.

All Aboriginal kinship systems were classificatory, that is, a limited number of terms was extended to cover all known persons.

Roles for contact with neighbouring indigenous peoples and lands included trade.
