The term ’child labour’ is often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, right to free existence and education and work which harm their physical and mental development. The answer varies from country to country, as well as among sectors within countries. The estimates also reveal that 71% of the total number of child labourers, are also engaged in the agricultural practices across the globe.
Of this total, a staggering 73 million are engaged in hazardous work, where children are likely to meet exploitative situations by nature or circumstances of work. And some may be forced to break the law. Child trafficking is about taking children out of their protective environment and preying on their vulnerability for the purpose of exploitation. Especially for girls, the “triple burden” of school, work and household chores heightens their risk of falling behind, making them even more vulnerable to poverty and exclusion. As part of larger initiatives to combat the worst forms of child labour, the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) works with governments, workers and employers’ organizations and NGOs to fight child trafficking It works with them to offer broad protection to children at risk and victims, prevent the crime of trafficking, enforce laws and prosecute traffickers, and assist victims in need.

The mission of UN.GIFT is, through a global multi-stakeholder partnership, to mobilize State and non-state actors to eradicate human trafficking by (i) reducing both the vulnerability of potential victims and the demand for exploitation in all its forms; (ii) ensuring adequate protection and support to those who do fall victim, and (iii) supporting the efficient prosecution of the criminals involved, while respecting the fundamental human rights of all persons. depriving them of the opportunity to attend school; obliging them to leave school prematurely; or.
