Then there was the look from Pipen when Denethor sent Faramir out on a suicide mission. He was proud of what a strong, responsible leader he was and his spartan life style [he also slept in his armor] was part of that. [And then we could get on to something worthwhile, like Elf/Oliphaunt fights.

I am one of those people who think the writers none too subtle, but this scene was well-constructed and said volumes without any actual dialogue.

, I hated the fact that Pippin's care for him wasn't present at all. After all, The King of Gondor Supports KFC. How strange is that?! I hope it's in the EE somewhere, as it seems rather odd that, after wanting the Ring so badly in TTT EE, Denethor never mentions it again.

Studied acting at Theatre Nepean in Sydney, Australia. (Partially because it was my own take on the situation as well ) I'm not sure if it is the correct intepretation, but at least it makes Denethor out to be not as bad as he seems. Then again, it was true to the book, so I consider that scene to be brilliant. Why the hell was Pippin crying for Faramir? At least, that's what would make sense and what I'm hoping for.

I assume that the intent was that Pippin knew Faramir a lot better than he did in the theatrical edition.

. I also loved the entrance of Gandalf and Pippin into Minas Tirith - brilliant. At least his part was over soon, thankfully. Book Denethor would not have quailed as the sight of Mordor's armies massed on the Pelennor; he would have set himself to fight.

Along with Faramir's temptation, this seems to be a concious decision on part of the writers to lessen the other noblemen in order ot elevate Aragorn as the one true leader of Men. I really like the FilmDenethor. Variety First I felt that there was a certain connection between Pipen and Faramir as soon as Pipen found out that Faramir had seen Frodo and Sam “not two days ago”. I felt sympathy for denethor in the books, I cried when he died, now I was sitting and secretly enjoying watching him plunge to his death, though he should have been dead long before he came to the edge of the cliff...

I found Denethor - and the way he was filmed (and played)- in the TC, really quite disturbing. I mean, in the book's, Pippin's pledge of service was portrayed as POSITIVE and meaningful.

My impression from the book was that Pippin was more or less goaded into pledging his service by Denethor's obvious contempt for him. I liked how they protrayed Denethor.

Producer | When trying to explain these things you often need to play 'guess the missing scene'. As it was played, he was just a cartoon villain.

*sigh*. Like all these things, maybe a scene will pop up in the EE to give it better context.

I think Denethor was the biggest disappointment in the movie for me. Director. Steam Workshop: Garry's Mod. In the book, Theoden's mind is overthrown early, but when he recovers he immediately musters an eored and rides to meet Isengard in battle. It was enjoyable to a very great degree. Or was Denethor even going to let him have any? But then the EE was released and Lothlorien became one of my favorite parts of the film. Interesting now that you bring it up. I liked Pippin's saddened and appalled look at Denethor's saying he would have preferred Faramir to die instead of Boromir (and I loved Faramir's expression even more) - and how could you have any other expression at such a cruel moment?
"The Exploding Vegetables of Gondor!" I hated the fact that Pippin's care for him wasn't present at all. He doesn't want Faramir to die needlessly. It worked for me. 'Little service, no doubt, will so great a lord of Men think to find in a hobbit, a halfling from the northern Shire; yet such as it is, I will offer it, in payment of my debt.' How else does one view a father that would say to the surviving son that he wishes him death and Boromir alive? So by the time we get to the Denethor’s meal/Faramir’s suicide run/Pipen singing montage, there is already a strong connection between Faramir and Pipen.

Denethor’s meal made me look at Denethor as an evil, heartless, vile creature, which is certainly different from the book, though I felt it worked well in the film and set the scene up well for Denethor’s death later on. ArPhy -- Surely the meal - eaten alone - is a sign of Denethor's remoteness and incipient madness, and People sometimes dismiss Boyens and walsh as being unsubtle (not that I agree for a moment) - here is a clear example of them being complex, ingenious and many-layered.

RB, The chicken was a tie-in with a KFC promotion in some countries to promote ROTK. Highly illogical, of course, since even the ones who did notice would have no way of knowing who it was, but it worked for the first viewing. O perhaps with the eating part they where doing one of two thing. I didn't notice it as much the first two times but it is a lot more obvious now.

In the movie, he pledges service, then is immediately regretful (or appears so in the "eating" scene).

Denethor is just portrayed horribly. It is only later, after looking into the palantir, that Denethor loses hope and goes from depressed to insane.

I think this - particularly with the related singing over the attack by Farmir's troop - is meant to be seen as symbolic and to be read on a number of levels simultaneously. His crown is wrong, he doesn't take the gate and his fight with Eowyn (which is the best part of the entire story BTW) is neutered. He wasn't.

When he plummeted off the whatever it's called, it seemed that showing his suicide to the orcs might boost their... whatever you call what Orcs have instead of courage.
